Import Duty Rates at a Glance

When you import solar panels, batteries, inverters and phone accessories into Nigeria, you pay two main layers of cost at the port: customs import duty (based on the HS code of the product) and the 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) applied on top of the duty-paid value.

Solar panels (HS 8541) typically attract a low duty in the 5–10% range as part of Nigeria’s renewable-energy promotion policy. Phone accessories such as chargers, cables and cases (HS 8504 / 3926 / 8517 families) generally range from 10% to 20% duty depending on classification.

Duties can change with the annual Finance Act, so always confirm the current tariff with a licensed customs agent before shipping. Under-declaring value to cut duty is a common mistake that leads to seizures, penalties and blacklisting.

Other Costs at the Nigerian Port

Beyond duty and VAT, budget for terminal handling charges, port storage, customs inspection (scanning/opening), haulage from Apapa or Tin Can Island, and clearing-agent fees. Together these usually add 15–25% on top of the FOB price.

A registered clearing agent (licensed by the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria, CRFFN) is worth the fee. They handle the valuation, duty payment via the Nigeria Customs portal and the final release order.
