Lead-Acid: the Value Workhorse

Tubular lead-acid batteries remain the most affordable way to store solar power in Nigeria. A 200Ah 12V tubular battery (roughly 2.4kWh) supports a fridge, lights and TV through the night and retails widely across Lagos and Onitsha markets.

They are heavy, need maintenance (water top-up for flooded types) and last 3–5 years with proper use – but the low entry price keeps them the default choice for most homes.

Lithium (LiFePO4): the Premium Upgrade

Lithium iron phosphate batteries last 8–12 years, discharge deeper (80–90% usable vs 50% for lead-acid), weigh 60–70% less, charge faster and need zero maintenance. The higher upfront price pays back through far more cycles over the battery’s life.

As lithium prices fall, importers are seeing accelerating demand in Nigeria’s urban market, especially for homes that already invested in good inverters.

What to Recommend to Your Customers

For budget buyers: tubular lead-acid. For buyers who plan to stay on solar for 8+ years, run heavy loads, or already have lithium-friendly inverters: LiFePO4. A common package is lead-acid today with a clear upgrade path to lithium later.
